About the book
In
1997, 1998 and 2000 I traveled to the Nuba Mountains to document the struggle
of the Nuba against the Government of Sudan. The Nuba Mountains Homepage
is the result of these journeys. A peace agreement was reached on the last day of 2004. But for the
Nuba peace is only the beginning. They have to rebuild their lifes; they
have to deal with landmines and with hundreds of thousands of displaced
people. Peace is also a return to the political struggle: agreements and
promises must be turned into power sharing and services to the people.
In December 2005, Dutch internet provider Planet Internet rewarded
me with 10,000 Euro for a plan to make a book about the Nuba.
I traveled to the Nuba Mountains and asked people I previously met to
tell me about their lives. Their stories and their portraits are complemented with
longer interviews that detail more of the recent history of the Nuba, like the interview Yousif Kuwa gave two months before he
died.
Apart from the portraits and my own photos, the book has beautiful photos by four great photographers. They are Yasuhiro Kunimori, Jack Picone, David Stewart-Smith and Antonio Cores. The book also includes historical material from the Sudan Archive of the Durham University Library.
It has a historical background that ranges from the origin of the Nuba to the most recent developments. This is perhaps the first time that many Nuba people talk about their part in the struggle with such candor. Jan Pronk, the former special envoy of Kofi Annan to Sudan, wrote the preface. |
